Despite filing for Bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, Japan Airlines has promised its customers that the airline will continue to operate its ‘business as usual.’
A JAL spokesperson told e-Travel Blackboard that the court-led reorganization of JAL will be a process similar to U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
“This will allow the company to continue operating as usual and it protects the airline from repayment demands.”
JAL will remain in the skies thanks to the intervention of Japan’s Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation (ETIC), which vowed to assist the ailing carrier with much needed financial support on Tuesday night.
The amount that that has been set aside to support JAL's corporate revitalisation through both ETIC and the DBJ (Development Bank of Japan) is 600 billion yen – 300 billion yen will be invested by ETIC.
In a statement released today, JAL said, “In order to conduct a thorough and speedy corporate restructuring the Tokyo district court has decided to commence corporate reorganisation.
“Under such proceedings the necessary funds to continue operations are guaranteed, and furthermore with a view to continuing business all owing debt and passenger mileage points are guaranteed.
The statement also stressed that all JAL will honour all flight tickets including domestic reservations, international reservations, domestic award ticket reservations and international award ticket reservations.
“It is business as usual; naturally we are taking new bookings. JAL code share flights and bookings made with JAL for connecting flights with other carriers will be operating as normal.”
The airline continued, “There is no cause for concern, passengers can continue t fly with JAL with the upmost confidence they always have.”
oneworld also released a statement, “Japan Airlines' position in the oneworld® alliance is unaffected by the announcement today that the airline is to operate under Japanese Corporate Reorganisation proceedings.”
